BOOK REVIEW - Defusing the High-Conflict Divorce
A Treatment Guide for Working with Angry Couples
Authors: Bernard Gaulier, Ph.D., Judith Margerum, Ph.D., Jerome A. Price, M.A. and James Windell, M.A.
In less than 250 pages the authors provide the reader with a stimulating and enhanced understanding of how high conflict divorces are created. This book is geared for those professionals (Judges, Attorneys, Friend of the Court Mediators/Family Counselors and Child and Family Therapists/Counselors) that work with parents and children who are caught in the cross-fire of a high conflict divorce. Of course, any parent who is dealing with the stress and struggle inherent in a high conflict divorce would also greatly benefit by reading this book. The authors identify many different problems as well as treatment and solution oriented interventions that are encouraging and informative.

More news from the Legislature... On January 30, 2007, House Bill No 4174 was introduced by Reps. Pearce, Rick Jones, Caul, Hildenbrand, Steil, Proos, Pastor, Brandenburg, Dean, LaJoy, Green and Sheen and referred to the Committee on Families and Children's Services.
The Bill aims to recognize an ever increasing form of parent-child visitation/communication. Computers, webcams and high-speed internet access are changing the ways that divorced/separated parents are keeping in touch with their children. There are many benefits to this form of "virtual visitation" which is being championed by an organization of the very same name. Read more at internetvisitation.org.

Great news from the legislature! Michigan Senator Bill Hardiman introduced a bill to the State Senate late last year to address our problem accessing records from Childrens Protective Services (CPS). That bill went quickly through the Senate and the House and was approved by Governor Granholm on January 3, 2007.
Public Act 621 of 2006 amends Child Protection Law to provide that CPS records can be provided to Friend of the Court offices, "if there is compelling need for child protective services records or information to determine custody or parenting time issues regarding a child." In order to obtain records, Friend of the Court personnel must submit a written request for information relating to its investigation, after which the CPS supervisor will determine if there is information relevant to the Friend of the Court evaluation. If so, the CPS will release records to the requesting individual at Friend of the Court within fourteen days.
Most of us have, to varying degrees, struggled with the inability to obtain CPS information directly from the source. Approval of this Public Act allows us to obtain records from CPS without having to rely other, less reliable sources.
Thanks to Senator Hardiman and the rest of the legislature for acting on this matter, and remedying this problem. You can access the full text of Public Act 621 of 2006 at http://www.legislature.mi.gov/.
